M2 high-speed steel is a molybdenum-based high-speed tool steel, belonging to the W-Mo series (Type 6-5-2). Its main components include carbon (0.8-0.9%), molybdenum (4.5-5.5%), tungsten (5.5-6.7%), and chromium, vanadium, etc. The factory hardness is ≤ 255HB. After quenching (at 1220-1240ºC) and double tempering (at 550-570ºC), it can reach HRC 63 or above, featuring high wear resistance, impact resistance and heat resistance (maintaining performance at 600ºC), and is suitable for manufacturing cutting tools, molds and high-strength component processing.
This material is characterized by high uniformity of carbide distribution and excellent toughness, but it has a tendency to overheat. The thermal treatment process parameters need to be strictly controlled. By adding rare earth element cerium, the carbide structure can be refined, alloy segregation can be improved, and high-temperature performance and processing stability can be enhanced. Typical applications include cutting tools, milling cutters, drills for cutting stainless steel/high-temperature alloys, as well as cold forging dies, precision stamping dies, and deep drawing dies that are subjected to impact loads.
M2 is a type of molybdenum-based high-speed steel, featuring low carbonization unevenness and high toughness. It is prone to overheating, so the heating temperature during quenching must be strictly controlled, and strict requirements are imposed on heat treatment protection. Due to its good hardness and wear resistance, it is mostly used to manufacture cutting tools for materials that are difficult to cut. M2 high-speed steel has a relatively high tendency for carbide formation, so strict heat treatment protection is required. It is suitable for molds that can withstand vibrations and impact loads.
